‘Agon’ is the first Dutch drama dealing with an event from our colonial history. Despite the praise of its contemporary, the famous actor Marten Corver, who far preferred Van Haren’s unpolished, powerful verses to the schoolmasterly verses of other playwrights, the play was never particularly successful. Polak calls Van Haren a pioneer of the moderns, and also Van der Vliet finds it incomprehensible that apart from Corver so few have estimated the value of this play.
