Historical play narrating the Siege of Groningen. In July of 1672, the city of Groningen was attacked by the bishop of Münster (also known as ‘Bommen Berend’ because of the large amount of bombs he used). After 4 weeks however, he was forced to retreat. This event has been commemorated annually ever since.

The Relief of Groningen was a boost for politicians in The Hague during a year of disasters, also known as the “Rampjaar” or “Disaster Year”: a Dutch saying coined that year describes the Dutch people as redeloos (“irrational”), its government as radeloos (“distraught”), and the country as reddeloos (“beyond salvation”).

Joost van den Vondel commemorated the Relief of Groningen in the following verses: “Groninge, uit het puin en asch en stof verrezen, vergeet de weldaet niet, die Godt u heeft bewezen.
