Boddaert is considered the most important eighteenth-century writer of erotic poetry and was also nicknamed “the dirty Boddaert” or “the dirty Pieter” in order to not confuse him with his grandfather, an edifying poet bearing the same name. Boddaert suffered a tragic death on March 8th 1805, as a result of falling off the wall of an Amsterdam canal and onto the ice. It is said that just before his death Boddaert had asked to be pardoned for his scandalous past and lifestyle.
