Three impressions of three etchings realized by Nicholas Lanier (Lanière) after drawings by Parmigianino. Although the set was originally printed in 1656, the paper used in this case is later, probably from the 18th-19th century. Therefore, these were impressed later on.
Lanier, art dealer and court musician in London, was dispatched to Italy and other European countries to collect works of art, mainly prints and drawings by Italian masters for the British regent. At a later stage in his life he took up etching, as the title of the set would suggest.

From left to right: Eve picking the apple, after a drawing for the figure of Eve in S. Maria della Steccata, Parma, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Inv. No. 62-I35); Moses holding up a tablet of the law, after a drawing of Moses for Santa Maria della Steccata, Parma, in the Musée du Louvre (Inv. no. 6374) and a shepherd leaning on a staff of which is unknown the provenance.

On verso in pencil: 1829, possibly the date of the impression?

The title can be translated as ‘First proofs made in etching by N. Lanier at his youthful age of sixty-eight 1656’. Since Lanier was indeed 68 in 1656, we must assume that these plates were his first amateur attempts at etching and were made in his old age. See British Museum for further information.

Etchings on paper; plate marks: 63 x 12 mm, 75 x 28 mm, 70 x 23 mm; total: 161 x 214 mm; in very good condition despite a couple of light browhish stains.
