2 books in one binding, first on chess and the second, a very rare edition on checkers (dames, dammen). Of the last book only 1 copy known in the US. No date known for this edition, other editions date from 1756.
Full title part 1: Stratagems of chess, or a collection of critical and remarkable situations, selected from the works of eminent masters, illustrated on plates, describing the ingenious moves by which the game is either won, drawn, or stale-mate obtained taken from the celebrated French work entitled Stratagèmes des Échecs carefully revised and improved, third edition, London, printed for T. and J. Allman, Prince’s street, Haover square; W.H. Reid, Charing-Cross; and Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, Paternoster-Row 1817. Titlepage browned just as the first black pages and the page with the chessboard.

Half leather binding with many damages. Guilt text on spine: Chess and draughts. Leather on top of the spine missing. 17 x 10,5 cm.
Provenance: On the verso: Ex libris pasted in with the text: Glasgow chess club Borthwick library. Handwritten text on the top: Number of Batch 67349. Also stamps with Glasgow chess club all over the book. Further on one of the empty pages the handwritten text “Richardson, 7 Worship Street”. London ? There is no mention for mr. Richardson on the short history of the Central Chess Club (Glasgow) online, see chessscotland.com. There is however a mention that the club won the Richardson Cup in 1914, 1925 and 1929. The Richardson Cup has been founded by James Brown Richardson (1837-1902), so the signature could be from him or his son.
[NL] Engelse vertaling van het Franse schaakboek uit 1802 geschreven door Sieur de Montigny, een bekende schaaktheoreticus. Selectie van Stratagems (= spelpatronen, tactiek) uit beroemde schaak partijen van destijds. Bevat meerdere afbeeldingen van schaakborden die telkens tonen hoe een partij gewonnen, remise of pat bereikt kan worden. Belangrijke bron voor de schaaktechniek. Het boek over dam technieken is geschreven door de Engelse wiskundige en schaakinstructeur William Payne. Diverse geselecteerde spellen worden uitgelegd en aangegeven wordt welke zetten er zijn gezet. Gericht op ‘jonge spelers’ van het Schotse of Engelse damspel maar ook bedoeld voor iedereen die zijn strategie wil verbeteren. William Payne (gest. ca. 1779) was niet alleen wiskundige, maar schreef ook over geometrie en whist, uitgegeven door zijn broer Thomas Payne.
