Full title: CANTHARIDES. A Treatise on the Safe Internal use of Cantharides in the Practice of Medicine, in the Practice of Physick written in Latin by Dr. John Greenfield, of the college of physicians, London, in his own vindication, on account of a contest that happen’d between himj and some of the College, a bour his administring them inwardly to his Patients. Translated into English with his approbation by John Marten, surgeon, the second edition, With additions of their wonderful Virtues internally administred in Ulcers of the Kidnies and Bladder, Stone, Gravel, Strangurys, Dropsies, Venereal Gleets &c. Imbecillities in Men, Barreness in Womer, as also An Anatomical of Chymical account of that INSECT with some curious observations thereof by the fire and microscope. Likewise a letter to the doctor of their effects in de Gour, with a true history of that cruel disease.

Half leather contemporary binding in good condition, except for some wear on the edges and hinges. Decorated spine and guilt text “Greenfield’s Treatise”. Original edition dated 1706. Titlepage in bad condition, holes due to bookworm on top and bottom and fortified left side (tape). Wormholes till page 7 of the text. Foxing on all pages.

[NL] Boek over het gebruik van cantharides (Spaanse vlieg) inwendig in de geneeskunde, van oudsher toegepast als urinarium, afrodisiacum en galactogogum, maar ook bekend om zijn toxische bijwerkingen. Marten vertaalde het oorspronkelijke werk van Dr. John Greenfield die de Latijnse tekst publiceerde na kritiek van het Londens Artsencollecte op zijn gebruik van cantharide. Marten voegde anekdotes en vele voorbeelden toe waarin patienten succesvol werden behandeld. Boek dient als veranwoording en handleiding voor artsen die deze methode hanteerden, met nadruk op juiste dosering, contra-indicaties en observatietips. Niet alleen medische handleiding, famacologie maar ook medische ethiek in dit boek.
