Interesting sources for the history of Protestant social welfare, women’s rehabilitation, and the international development of professional nursing inspired by Theodor Fliedner’s pioneering deaconess institution at Kaiserswerth.

The Rheinisch-Westfälischer Diakonissen-Verein in Kaiserswerth is regarded as the cradle of the Protestant deaconess movement. The institution was founded in 1836 by the Lutheran pastor Theodor Fliedner (1800–1864) and his wife, Friederike Fliedner. From Kaiserswerth, an international network of deaconess houses developed that profoundly influenced the professionalization of nursing, poor relief, education, and social welfare. Florence Nightingale trained at the institution in 1850 and 1851, where she gained practical experience in nursing before achieving worldwide fame for her work during the Crimean War.
