A fascinating and early Dutch travel guide to Spain, Portugal and neighbouring countries, published in Amsterdam in 1650. The work offers a remarkably detailed account of the Iberian Peninsula, combining practical itineraries with geographical, historical, political and cultural observations. The book describes routes through Spain and Portugal, including journeys from Bordeaux to Bayonne, San Sebastián, Burgos, Madrid, Toledo, Lisbon, Gibraltar, Seville, Granada, Valencia, Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela. Particular attention is devoted to distances, roads, mountain passes, rivers, towns, churches, monuments and other notable sights. Besides practical travel information, the work provides extensive descriptions of Spanish history, royal genealogies, government, customs, agriculture, natural resources and regional characteristics. The sections on Santiago de Compostela and the pilgrimage routes through northern Spain are of particular interest for the history of European travel and pilgrimage. First (German) edition of this work was published in Ulm in 1637.
The volume opens with an attractive engraved allegorical title page depicting the Spanish royal coat of arms supported by two putti, with figures representing Europe and the overseas world (a black man). The book also contains a charming introductory dialogue and a verse travel lesson (Reys-lesse), offering practical and moral advice to prospective travellers.
