First French edition of Robert Percival’s important account of Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka), based on his experiences on the island between 1797 and 1800, shortly after the British takeover of the former Dutch possessions. Percival provides an extensive description of the island’s geography, inhabitants, customs, religion, economy and natural resources, with observations on Colombo, Kandy, the cinnamon trade and pearl fisheries. The work concludes with an account of the British embassy to the King of Kandy in 1800.
