Amsterdam, Frederik Muller, 1861. [4 parts]
Set of two volumes, complete four parts. For this work, it was originally Jacob van Lennep’s intention to collect his father’s previously unpublished poems together with a short life sketch. The plan gradually expanded. Contains portrait images (among which a physionatrace of David Jacob van Lennep and engraving of C. van Lennep) and fold-out plates of letters.
Jacob van Lennep grew up at a time when many people had a tremendous interest in the national past. They searched for the roots of their culture in archives, ruins and old folk songs. To that quest Van Lennep, as a novelist, tried to help: he aimed to bring his contemporaries into contact with their ancestors in a very direct way. Unlike “boring” and uninspiring school books, his novels really brought the past to life. Van Lennep was a busy man throughout the course of his life, combining literary work with his job as a state lawyer. He wrote all kinds of linguistic and historical studies, delivered a Vondel edition, participated in many societies and realized the construction of Amsterdam’s dune waterworks.
