1730 Catholic book, partly manuscript, partly printed, illustrated. Gabrielle and Pierre Landry’s “La Sainte Messe de la Passion” is an early 18th-century French Catholic liturgical text. This book, which contains numerous full-page engravings, contains prayers and scriptures used in the Passion of Jesus. And while the liturgies, hymns, and prayers in this book are important, the real draw is the exquisite engravings – views of priests in prayer and supplication. Gabrielle Landry is one of the few female booksellers in 18th century Paris. Interleaved printed copy with at the blank pages manuscript text: Prefatio de S. Augustino, Praefatio de Sanctissima Trinitate (“Vere dignum et iustum est…”), Psalterium, etc. Printed text in French. Manuscript text in Latin. At the end a caligraphed signature. Engravings signed with Landry.

Full leather binding with some wear on the extremities, top of the spine damaged severely. Interior complete and in better condition. Maculature, Binder’s waste used as fortification of the binding. French text on paper. Octavo edition, in -8, 16 x 11 cm.

[NL] Frans devotieboek uit eerste helft van de 18e eeuw. Kopergravures van Landry met gedrukte tekst afgewisseld met manuscript pagina’s in Latijn. Katholieke devotieliteratuur waarin iedere handeling van de priester tijdens de mis symbolisch wordt verbonden met een gebeurtenis uit het lijden van Christus. Deze allegorische uitleg van de mis was vanaf de late middeleeuwen tot diep in de achttiende eeuw een belangrijk hulpmiddel voor leken om de liturgie bewuster en devoter mee te beleven. Uitgeefster Gabrielle Landry is een van de relatief zeldzame vrouwelijke boekverkopers en uitgevers die in de achttiende eeuw aan de Parijse Rue Saint-Jacques werkzaam was.
