The printed journal of Constantijn Huygens jr., Dutch statesman and chronicler, also known for his contributions to scientific instruments. Constantijn kept a private diary, in which he recorded all aspects of early modern court life in the Netherlands and England, as well as notes on the society, culture and general scientific progress of the two countries. His diary also describes various sexual escapades of his contemporaries and provides insight into the ideas on human sexuality of his time.
His father Constantijn Huygens sr. was part of he Dutch elite, stood in close contact with important men like Spinoza and Descartes, and is even said to have “discovered” Rembrandt. Huygens’ estate has largely remained in the possession of his family, but much of it came up for auction in 1823. Aside from Constantijn Huygens’ own works, it had come to include also the archives of his sons Constantijn Huygens jr. and Christiaan Huygens. With the support of King William I, the estate was purchased and divided among a number of state institutions. The correspondence of Christiaan Huygens went to Leiden University, the literary works of Constantijn sr. and jr. to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
