Bulthuis, Jan

Complete Set, Dutch History, Illustrations | Vaderlandsche gezichten of afbeeldingen, behoorende tot den Tegenwoordigen staat der Vereenigde Nederlanden, in den jaare 1786 [to 1792] naar ‘t leven getekend door J. Bulthuis [later: J. Gardiner Visscher after J.B.] en in ‘t koper gedruckt door K.F. Bendorp.

A luxury item, bound in contemporary half leather with decorative gilding on the spine and marbled boards. With 597 unique prints (copper plates), these three volumes offer an expansive tour of the daily life, landscapes, and landmarks across18th-century Netherlands. People and animals populate snapshots of city life (markets, government buildings, churches), canal and port commerce, pastoral settings (country estates, rural towns, farms, children at school), and castles. Rarely do such volumes remain intact, as individual images were often cut out to be sold as independent illustrations.
