A collection of fables by the French author Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian (1755-1794). Bound with a prize form granted to E. ter Meulen for his impeccable presence at the Institute of Dirk Ouwersloot (1794-1874) in Heemstede. He was boarding school owner in Heemstede (Amsterdam is crossed out), moved in 1850 to Doetinchem where he died in 1874. Date of price form: June 29th of 1844. All fables are accompanied by plates. The fables are followed by the poem “Tobie” and he eglogue “Ruth”. From p. 239 on: fables by various other authors.

Although nowadays Florian is mainly known for his fables for a younger public, his contemporaries praised him for his poetical and pastoral novels. Born from a Castilian mother, Florian was heavily influenced by Spain and its literature, he drew much inspiration from the works of Cervantes. In 1788, Florian became a member of the Académie française. His famous collection of Fables appeared in 1802.
