Cervantes, M., de
Cervantes, 1866, Spanish | El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote De La Mancha, part 1 and 2, Leipzig: F.A. Brockhaus, 1866, set of 2 volumes.
Parts 1 and 2 of Cervantes’ Don Quijote, a two-part epic novel originally published in 1605 and 1615. In Spanish.
In the Spanish village of La Mancha, an eccentric countryman decides to become a knight-errant as a consequence of his infatuation with chivalric books. He assumes the name Don Quixote and embarks on a quest to restore chivalry, which leads him along a path of fantastic challenges and (imaginary) enemies.
Originally written as a parody of the chivalric romances that had long been in literary vogue, interpretations of the satirical novel changed over time. In the nineteenth century Cervantes’ character was reimagined as a result of Spanish nationalism blending with the Romantic movement, and Don Quijote was suddenly praised for his passion and tragic idealism.
Don Quijote is possibly one of the most-translated books, and one of the most widely read novels of all time. In addition to its major success in the literary community, Don Quijote also inspired artists in all other media.
