Franz Edmund Weirotter (1633-1771).
Antique print I Landscape with resting soldiers, published 1775, 1 p.
Landscape with resting soldiers, from a set of prints published in 1775 in Paris, under the title “Œuvre De F. E. Weïrotter, Peintre Allemand, Mort à Vienne en 1771. Contenant près de deux cent Paysages & Ruines, dessinés d’après nature, tant en France qu’en Italie, & gravés à l’eau-forte avec beaucoup de goût, par lui-même” (Work of FE Weirotter, German painter, Death in Vienna in 1771. Containing nearly two hundred Landscapes and Ruins, drawn from nature, both in France and Italy, and engraved with etching with great taste, by himself).
The publication-date of 1775 is suggested in a manuscript note in the British Library copy. (The firm of Basan and Poignant operated from 1773 to 1788). This is a posthumous collected edition of most of the prints of a popular landscape-etcher, who had produced some 288 etchings. The landscapes show the influence of 17th-century Dutch as well as contemporary French painting. Several bear names of dedicatees, who were probably collectors of Weirotter’s oeuvre. The enormous collection of Weirotter’s prints, in various states, that was made by Prince von Paar may now be seen in the British Museum, London.
