Full, contemporary parchment binding with black and red sprinkled edges, (8) 460 (12) pp. A titlepage shows the interior of an apothecary, with the header “Nieu licht der apotekers en distilleerkonst”. Illustrated with in-text woodcuts. Bears an approbatio from J. Stullius dated 25 July 1653. Printed in Gothic and Roman type. Owner’s inscription on the title page has been cut out (does not affect the text). A few manuscript marginalia (symbols) in ink. A very nice copy.
This is a second-edition print of a popular manual for pharmacists that was published four times between 1657 and 1667. Written by Jan Bisschop (1590-1664), the work, divided into eight books, explains how to prepare medicinal recipes, syrups, tinctures, unguents, and more, with recipes and instructions pertaining to ingredients, flavoring, and coloring. The chemistry of distillation and alchemy is also outlined, accompanied by illustrative in-text woodcuts.
Beyond the book’s insights into the history of medicine, pharmacology, and alchemy in the 17th century, it is also important for its relevance to women’s history. As the frontispiece illustrates, women played an essential, visible role in concocting treatments for ailments.
