As the appointed tutor of the Dauphin of France’s eldest son, Fénelon was charged with guiding the character formation of a future King of France. During this period, Fénelon wrote several important works for the specific purpose of guiding his young charge, such as the Fables and the Dialogues des Morts . His pedagogical concepts and literary works exerted a lasting influence on French culture.
By far the most lasting of Fénelon’s works was his Les Aventures de Télémaque , a didactic novel telling the story of Ulysses’ son Telemachos. Below the surface however it voices an attack on the divine right absolute monarchy (the dominant ideology of Louis XIV’s France). The work became an immediate best seller both in France and abroad. It was translated into many languages and inspired numerous imitations.
