Groundbreaking work in which the medicin doctor Devaux advocated natural healing based on human instinct. The book caused controversy within the medical world, while it found support among philosophical movements.

Half leather binding in bad condition, 13,5 x 8 cm. In-12, duodecimo edition. Interior in good condition, sometimes a brown spot on a page but most of the time clean. First pages a bit browned. With attractive frontispice with cupid touching up the portrait of Galen: Galenus Authorum Medicine Compilator + l’Amour de la santé Francoise.

[NL] Jean Devaux (1649-1729) was een Franse chirurg en medicus. Eerste druk gepubliceerd te Leiden in 1682. Devaux stelt dat de mens, net als dieren, van nature een zelfherstellend instinct bezit dat zijn gezondheid onderhoudt. Hij pleit voor zelfzorg op basis van instinct, waarbij medische interventie alleen nodig is als het natuurlijk evenwicht ernstig is verstoord. Zijn opvattingen veroorzaakten controverse bij professionele artsen; een tweede werk werd opgeschort nadat collega’s kritiek uitten. Jean Devaux was Prévôt van de chirurgengilde in Parijs, student van Claude David, gerespecteerd binnen vakkringen, maar zalvende, instinctgerichte geneeskunde stuitte op tegenstand. Filosoof Leibniz verwijst naar Devaux rond 1701 in de context van discussies over instinctvaardigheid bij dieren en mensen. [Hoefer 13, p. 938].
