Rare book with two comedies bythe ancient Greek playwrighter Aristophanes: Plutus, a satire on wealth and its distribution and Nubes or The Clouds, a comediy that critiques the intellectual fashions of classical Athens, targeting Socratic philosophy. Greek text on the left and Latin translation or commentary on the right.
Full leather binding missing the front. Titlepage with text in Latin and Greek. Interior in good condition. With:vita Aristophanis, Plutus, Nubes, Notes and Indexes. Robert Clavel was an English printer active in London during the late 17th century, known for publishing classical texts and scholarly works.
Provenance: Handwritten text on the titlepage: R. Fairfax, 4 – 9 – 1750. F 19 1/2. Text on the flyleaf Robert Fairfax His Book Anno Domini 1750. Robert Fairfax (1707-1793) was a British Army officer, politician and peer. He died at Leeds Castle, England, without an heir.
[NL] Slechte band waarvan de voorkant mist, maar interieur in veel betere conditie. Griekse tekst met Latijnse vertaling, commentaar van de twee komedies van Aritstophanes (446-386 voor Christus): Plutus en Nubes (Wolken of de school voor sofisten). In het laatste is Socrates een van de slachtoffers van Aristophanes.
