[Prent, antique drawing in ink/Oude inkttekening] Important news. (1836?).
Interior with three peasants reading a letter by candlelight (kaarslicht). There is a painting with the same composition that went for sale on 11.04.2009. The drawing and the painting present similarities and discrepancies. For instance, the young woman standing behind the older man looks towards the viewer in this drawing, whereas in the painting she gazes at the candle light. Other details concern the disposition of the objects displayed in the room, like one more plate on the table, an empty lamp holder etc… Signed on the verso with brush and brown ink: “J.H. van Grootvelt”. The painting is dated 1836, the drawing seems to be from the same period.

Sepia ink over thick paper; watercolor; some mold towards the top, affecting the background of the composition. Total: 357 x 272 mm. Very charming drawing.
