The Dutch poet and minister J.J.L. ten Kate (1819-1889) was gifted in translating foreign lyrics into clear, fluent and beautiful Dutch verse. Other popular works translated by Ten Kate are Dante's Inferno (de hel) and Milton's Paradise Lost (het verloren paradijs). The plates by Gustave Doré (1832-1883) give a beautiful example of his background in romantic art. The overwhelming landscapes he depicted are alternated by witty animal figures in dark forests.
