Full overlapping vellum binding with text on spine: “C. Suetonius”. Two stickers on the spine as well, without text. Large octavo edition, in -8, 8º, 20 x 12,5 cm. Pages in good condition, except for some pages with light browning. STCN ID 117340367. Collation: *-2*⁸ A-3M⁸ 3N⁴ (3N4 blank). Bookblock almost loose, therefore some flyleafs a bit frayed.

Provenance: With pasted in ex libris of L.J.W. Smit. This could be Leonardus Johannes Willebrordus Smit (1842-1920) rector of the Gymnasium in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Also possible is Leonardus Joannes Wilhelmus Smit (1876-1950), lawyer in Breda.

[NL] Het werk “Opera” van Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, in de editie van 1667 gedrukt te Leiden en Rotterdam is een verzameling van de overgeleverde werken van de Romeinse historicus Suetonius, voorzien van aantekeningen door de geleerde Johannes Schild. Suetonius leefde in de eerste en tweede eeuw na Christus (ca. 69–122 n.Chr.) en is vooral bekend om zijn werk “De vita Caesarum” (“Levens van de keizers”), waarin hij de levens beschrijft van de eerste Romeinse keizers, van Julius Caesar tot en met Domitianus. Dit werk is beroemd vanwege zijn anekdotische stijl en aandacht voor persoonlijke eigenschappen, schandalen en karaktertrekken van de keizers, naast politieke gebeurtenissen. In de zeventiende eeuw werd Suetonius veel gelezen, zowel om zijn historische waarde als om zijn morele en politieke lessen.

De 12 keizers zijn: Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellius, Vespasianus, Titus en Domitianus. Suetonius geeft gedetailleerde inkijkjes in hun karakters, uiterlijk, privéleven en politieke daden, vaak met een focus op sappige anekdotes en schandalen. Suetonius schreef deze biografieën terwijl hij als secretaris van keizer Hadrianus werkte, wat hem toegang gaf tot archieven. Het is een cruciale, primaire bron voor kennis over de vroege Romeinse keizertijd.
