Jacob Laurensz van der Vinne (1688-1737), after Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) and Richard Brakenburg (1650-1702)
Antique prints, etching | Complete set of seven plates after Adriaen van Ostade and Richard Brakenburg, published 1699, 7 pp.
Complete set of seven etchings van der Vinne realized when he was just eleven years old. All the plates are copied after Adriaen van Ostade’s works and are in reverse. The set is stitched on the left as a small album. The set is signed on the first etching: ‘Jacob Vander Vinne fecit et excudit / ANNN(sic!) 1699’.
The frontispiece features three heads of old men, the one in the middle in a square frame, the ones on the sides in rounded frames. The second plate, ‘The seller of Spectacles’ has been retouched with pen and brown ink on the fence of the window, on the top left. The third plate, ‘The empty jug’ shows three peasants in an inn conversing around a table, looking at an empty jug. The fourth plate depicts a knife grinder, working in the middle of the street. On the bottom of the fifth plate, the ‘Pater Familias’ is an inscription in Dutch: ‘Eet soete kintjes eet je livertjes sijne Reet’. The sixth plate shows a small concert, as in an interior a man plays the violin while a woman sings and another man, sitting opposite to the woman, sings along with a glass of beer in his hand. The last plate from the set is a copy after a painting by Richard Brakenburg (1650-1702). Possibly, this last impression is the same etching inv. RP-P-1934-600 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, reported as ‘Anonymous copy after Brakenburg’.
