In the background a man seated, shoulders towards the viewer, is working at the boxes containing the types; in the middle of the composition the press and in the foreground the master piling the printed sheets on a table.

Inscribed above: ‘Bockdruckeye te Haarlem gevonden ontrent het Jaer 1440’; and on the bottom: ‘Ovat is de Druckery een konst… snoert den mond.’

Signed on the bottom: ‘P. Zanredam jnuent. / J. v. Velde Sculpsit.’; used as illustration in Samuel Ampzing’s: ‘Beschryvinge ende lof der stad Haerlem in Holland […]’ published by Adriaen Roman in Haarlem in 1628.

Etching on paper with some margin; plate mark: 158 x 119 mm; total: 182 x 1425 mm; only state; slightly cooked paper, soiled due to handling on the bottom right corner; Hollstein 424; Franken 484.
