Reproduction of the first state, unfinished and before lettering below. The original plate shows several marks from the impurities of the plate, here completely absent. Partial paper watermark of a Fortuna “found in archival documents of around 1810-15 (cf. Churchill 193; Voorn, De papiermolens in de provincie Noord-Holland, 1960, p 141 no 193, ill p 224 and cover ill.). It was probably produced in the Zaanstreek area above Amsterdam, Holland.[…]” (Albert Elen, 2009, paperhistory.org [last seen 02/05/2023]).
The original plate was designed for the ‘Icones principum, virorum doctorum, pictorum, chalcographorum, statuariorum nec non amatorum pictoriae artis numero centum ab Ant. van Dyck ad vivum expressae ejusque sumptibus aeri incisae.’ published in Antwerpen by Gillis Hendricx, [1645-1646].
