‘Memories are such a delight’, we are informed by the Latin inscription below this oval pseudo-portrait. The artist here does credit to his name, for ‘schalks’, in the sense of jokingly doing or saying improper, would be a very apt description of this figure’s action. The three Latin words undoubtedly refer to the vulgar gesture the man is making, balling his right hand into a fist and sticking his thumb between his index and middle fingers. Fond memories of erotic escapades appears to be the way that the sum of the text, gesture and facial expression should read. [E. de Jong, Mirror of Every day Life, 1997, cat. 77].
