A dice player, probably the button maker Nicolas Fonvielle, who gambled with dices with friends for beer. The original plate by Chodowiecki was very likely his first ever realized, and it was inspired by a drawing by Rembrandt. He signed the plate with the pseudonym ‘Huquier’ and provided a fictitious publishing address.The first edition was published around 1797. At the Rijksmuseum and at the British Museum are impressions from the original plate (RM RP-P-OB-13.356, BM 1863,0613.6); In Braunschweig, at the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum (CGGeyser WB 3.1) is an impression from another plate, etched by Christian Gottlieb Geyser (1742-1803) bearing the same inscription, though with the addition of his address; despite Geyser’s signature appears also on our plate, this is to be considered a further version from the original, more elaborate than the previous, and with a different publisher, Jacoby (fl. 1786-1820) in Berlin.

The complete inscription reads: “LE PASSE DIX. / A Paris chez Huquier rue St Jaques au coin de la rue / des Mathurins / avec privilege”.
Probably the public greeted the original print with great success. ca. 1800-1820.
