The altar of the holy sacrament; at left, the holy sacrament beneath a canopy, carried in procession and followed by the young King Louis XIV and his mother Anne of Austria, leading towards a large edifice with three arches, an altar below the central arch, and surmounted by a large crown held by angels, with a crowd of spectators kneeling in front of tapestries after Raphael with smoke rising from celebratory fires behind.

According to the British Museum, the plate commemorates a public demonstration of the young king’s piety staged by the queen and Mazarin, possibly that described by Mme de Motteville in her memoirs as having taken place on 12 June 1648 in the first court of the Palais-Royal where a temporary altar was erected.

Lettered in margin below image with four line dedication in French to Tubeuf by Damico, beginning “A MONSEIG.r TUBEUF CONS. ER DU ROY” and ending “tres obeissant serviteur B. D. Amico” and with production detail: “S. Della Bella f.”

[NL] Links een processie waarin het Heilige Sacrament wordt gedragen onder een baldakijn, gevolgd door de jonge koning Lodewijk XIV (Lodewijk de 14e) en zijn moeder Anna van Oostenrijk. De processie leidt naar een groot bouwwerk met drie bogen, met een altaar onder de centrale boog en bovenop een grote kroon gedragen door engelen. Naast het bouwwerk een menigte toeschouwers geknield voor wandtapijten (naar de wandtapijten van Rafael in het Vaticaan). Tekst in het Frans en een wapenschild in de ondermarge. Antieke prent van de oude meester Stefano della Bella.
