Maurand, Charles (1824-1904) after Daumier, Honoré (1808-1879)

[Antique print, 1862, Veiling, auction in Paris] Les amateurs de tableaux à l’hôtel Bouillon, 1 p.

A group of men gathered around a painting held by another man against his own chest, while an auctioneer on the far left background is about to strike with the hammer his podium. The men looking at the work of art are referred to as “amateurs”. The facial traits are somehow characterized by strong features as if they were caricatures. The original drawing is by Daumier. He signed the composition on the bottom left and the inscribed title reads: “Les amateurs… (Dessin de M. Daumier)”. Signed by the printmaker on the bottom right: “MAURAND”. The engraving appeared in many newspapers: Journal illustré, 13.08.1864 (1st state), La Presse illustrée, 19.01.1868 (1st state), Meynial (réimpression) 1920 (2nd state), Monde illustré 25.01.1862 (1st state), Print And Drawing Club, AIC 1942 (1st state (rei)mpression).

Wood engraving on paper; letterpress on verso; plate: 162 x 222 mm, total: 178 x 246 mm; mounted on passepartout that allows viewing the lettered text on the verso. DR Number 6001, Bouvy 922, Rümann 868. In very good condition.
