Bloemaert, Cornelis (1603-1684) after Bloemaert, Hendrick (1601/02-1672)

[Antique engraving/gravure] Boy with birdcage/jongen met vogelkooitje.

A young boy with hat holding a birdcage with two birds inside. In his right hand is also a wind instrument, likely a recorder. Below, two lines of text in Dutch: “Mijn vogeltiens sijn vlug, hierom moet ick se sluijten. / Want beter tove daer in dan driemael twe daer buijten.”; numbered on the bottom right: “2”. On the top right is visible a crack on the plate, which resulted also in the first state. See for example the impression of the first state at the Rijksmuseum, inv. RP-P-BI-1425. Date of print ca. 1625.

Engraving on paper, trimmed within plate mark; total: 167 x 190 mm; state II/2; a light brown stain on the shoulder of the boy, otherwise in extremely good condition, very sharp contrasts. On the verso are traces of ink resulted from the piling up of freshly printed impressions. Hollstein 294.
