Portrait of the preacher Johannes Henricus Hacke. Bust portrait turned to the right, looking towards the observer. An interesting example of a stunning pen drawing after a mezzotint. The draftsman took care of reproducing the light and shades of the mezzotint with a precise pointillism technique. A treat for the eyes!
The mezzotint is in its second state. The inscription below reads: ‘JOHANNES HENRICUS HACKE, Predikant te ’s Gravenhage. Hij, die nooit vruchtelos beklimt den predikstoel, Is HACKE: wen hij spreekt, wordt, al wat hoort, gevoel.’
Signed and dated: MDCCXCV. J. van Hoogstraten [Jan van Hoogstraten (1627-1654)] / C.H. Hodges, pinx.t et Sculp.t / A.V. Hoogstraten / F. Geysen.
The stunning drawing bears the same inscription; if the printed portrait shows a simple stone frame, the drawing’s framing is more classical, with columns on the sides. It is signed and dated below: F. van Andel Fecit a Middelburg 1798.
Mezzotint on paper, trimmed on plate mark; total: 184 x 136 mm; in great condition. Drawing on paper in pen and black ink, total: 225 x 175 mm, in great condition. A.C.A.W. van der Feltz: Charles Howard Hodges 1764-1837, p. 321, cat.nr. 666.
