Design for a ceiling.
Very charming wide drawing divided in two sections with a decorative progression: from a sketch of the basic lines to the most complete outlook of the designed, filled in with colors.
Other drawings with a very similar compositional scheme are to be found at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (i.e. WA1925.298.56 / .72 / .111).
With the address of, possibly, one of the collectors of this drawing, stamped on the bottom left corner: CLAUDE DAVID ARCHITECT DECORATEUR 11 RUE POISSONIÈRE PARIS.
Collector’s mark on bottom right corner: Lodewijk Arnold Houthakker (1926-2008) [L.3893].
Scarce is the available information on this artist. He appears [as Claude-Jules or Jules-Claude David] among the artists listed in the catalogue of the World’s Fair of 1889 [nrs. 2247 to 2250] with the designs of the Hotel de la Banque Cordier, in Rue Chauchat in Paris (1880), the Hôtellerie du Lyon d’Or: salle des festins(1882), the Hôtel de M. le baron J. de R…: grand salon Louis XIV (1888), and the Restitution du château d’Echoisy (Charente).
