after Jan van Goyen (1596-1656)
Antique red chalk drawing | Travellers near a house at a pond, ca. 1660-1690, 1 p.
Stunning drawing after a composition by Jan van Goyen, that was turned into print by Johannes Visscher (1633-1692) [see Rijksmuseum, inv. RP-P-OB-61.898]. According to the Hollstein, the original drawing, dated 1653, was in collection A. Stein in Cras-sans-Sierre (CH). It is also reported in HU Beck, Jan van Goyen 1596-1656 , vol III, p. 88, no. 475A.
A very similar hand drafted the River landscape with boats, figures and a mill , signalled in collection Eemnes from 1998 (RKD KWN 16428), and referred to as “after” or “in the style of” van Goyen.
Slightly smaller than the plate, this drawing seems still fresh and rather free, especially in the rendition of the shades in the foreground.
Suggested attribution: Wouter Knijff (ca. 1607-ca. 1693), an artist active in the workshop of Van Goyen.
On the brownish mount paper, inscribed in pen and brown ink: van Goyen.
