Louis Wolff behoort tot de eerste generatie Nederlandse musici die een internationale carrière wist op te bouwen. Zijn benoeming als concertmeester in Berlijn op 22-jarige leeftijd was uitzonderlijk en getuigt van zijn grote reputatie. Vervolgens droeg hij bij aan de vorming van het Concertgebouworkest, voordat hij zijn loopbaan voortzette in Engeland en de Verenigde Staten. Hoewel zijn naam tegenwoordig minder bekend is dan die van tijdgenoten als Joseph Joachim of Willem Mengelberg, werd hij in zijn tijd beschouwd als een van de belangrijkste Nederlandse violisten van zijn generatie.
