The first French translation of two of Simon Stevin’s works on military engineering. In part one the author describes successful organization methods of military camps, whereas in the second part he elaborates on the use of special sluices as a fortification method. Stevin’s own experiences were of immense value to his work, and earned him the reputation of “Father” of modern statics. Stevin took part in the siege of Julig in 1610 and used his experience in the formulation of his books. He innovatively bound together castrametation with siege strategy, tactics and fortification design, creating a scientific axis between them. Furthermore the use of sluices made a virtue out of the excessive water channels of Holland, by placing them at the center of a new national forticfication method.

[NL] De eerste Franse vertaling van twee werken van Simon Stevin over militaire techniek. In het eerste deel beschrijft de auteur succesvolle organisatiemethoden van militaire kampen, terwijl hij in het tweede deel dieper ingaat op het gebruik van speciale sluizen als versterkingsmethode. Stevins eigen ervaringen waren van enorme waarde voor zijn werk, en bezorgden hem de reputatie van “Vader” van de moderne statica. Stevin nam deel aan het beleg van Julig in 1610 en gebruikte zijn ervaring bij het opstellen van zijn boeken. Op innovatieve wijze verbond hij de planning en constructie van militaire kampen met belegeringsstrategie, tactiek en vestingontwerp, waardoor een wetenschappelijke as tussen beide ontstond. Bovendien maakte het gebruik van sluizen een deugd van de waterwegen van Holland, door ze in het centrum van een nieuwe nationale vestingbouwmethode te plaatsen.
