Beginning his career as a scribe, Horace quickly befriended poets and important figures of his day such as Virgil and the Emperor Augustus, and he eventually achieved great fame as a poet, satirist and critic. He is known for detailed self-portraits in genres such as epodes, satires and epistles, and lyrics. Many of his verses have been the inspiration for mottoes that are used up until this day, such as simplex munditiis (elegance in simplicity), splendide mendax (nobly untruthful), sapere aude (dare to know), nunc est bibendum (now is the time to drink), carpe diem (seize the day, perhaps the only one still in common use today).
