The Eunuch by Terentius is a Roman comedy in which a young man disguises himself as a eunuch in order to gain access to the woman he loves, causing confusion and comic entanglements. In the end, the misunderstandings are resolved and the play concludes with recognition and a socially acceptable marriage. Translated into Dutch by Jacob Westerbaen. Rare edition, only 3 copies known in STCN (nr 080254101).

Later decorated paper binding, with some light fading on the edges and spine. Quarto edition, in -4. With vignet on the titlepage. Pages with some frayes and browning on the edges. A good copy.

[NL] De Eunuchus is een Romeinse komedie van Terentius (2e eeuw v.Chr.), gebaseerd op een Griekse voorbeeldplot uit de Nieuwe Komedie (zoals Menander). Het stuk draait om liefde, vergissing, identiteitsverwisseling en list — typische elementen van de klassieke komedie. De titel verwijst naar een eunuch (kamerling), die een belangrijke rol speelt in de misleiding die het verhaal in beweging zet. Jacob Westerbaen (1599-1670) behoorde tot de Haagse literaire kring rond Constantijn Huygens. Gerebaert p. 174, nummer 12.1.A.
