The book deals with l’Art poétique, the imitation of Horace’s Ars Poetice. It also contains several satires, among which an imitation of Juvenals satire. The book is an early illustrated Dutch edition of the work of the French poet, translator and critic Nicolas Boileau-Despreéaux (1636-1711). The title refers to the sublime (het sublieme) in poetry and rhetoric (retorica en poezie). The greek original is written by the Greek writer Longin, Longinus. Longinus treatise ‘Peri Hypsous’ dealt with the idea of sublimity and its theoretical repercussions. Boileua’s publication is not so much as a translation as a shift in understanding the Longinian sublime, for Boileau shifted its dominant association with the style of discourse towards the extraordinary quality and effect of discourse. Boileau emphasises that Longinus’ understanding of the sublime differs from the idea of the sublime style (or “Stile Sublime”), the highest of the three rhetorical styles in Ancient Rhetoric.
