Rare first edition illustrated by Mervyn Peake (1911-1968), not to be imported into the Britisch Empire or the USA. Lively humour and strong instinct for the macabre and the grotesque. The most memorable interpretation of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll comes from Mervyn Peake. With original dustjacket.
Original dustjacket with some small creases on the edges, further in good condition. 18 x 12 cm. Paper binding in good condition, spine with some wear. Illustrations by the famous Mervyn Peake.Peppin / Micklethwait p.229-230 (listin g the 1954 Peake edition only): “He was at his best in terpretin g fantasy – his own and other writers’ – and was one of the few successful illustrators of Lewis Carroll sin ce Tenniel, replacin g Tenniel’s authorative but sometimes static imagery with ephemeral and often whimsical designs expressin g the mutability of a dream. The lively humour present in much of his work was matched by an equally strong in stin ct for the macabre and the grotesque, and these qualities were merged in the facial caricature that were a recurrin g element in his illustrative drawin g.” Ovenden also only lists the 1954 edition: “(…) the most memorable in terpretation comes from Mervyn Peake”.

[NL] De eerste druk met de illustraties van Mervyn Peake. Deze uitgave verscheen in de Zuphyr Books reeks en kwam vóór de Britse publicatie met de Peake-illustraties. Zephyr bracht haar in 1946 uit, twee jaar voor de Londense editie.
