A pastoral “happy-ending” play in which conflicts of love are resolved under the symbolic guidance of the chaste goddess Diana, reaffirming the ideal of sincere and virtuous affection. With as actors: Pallas, Apollo, Rey and Liefd’-Bloeyende. Page 13/14 and 19/20 [leaf D1 and D4] were missing but are replaced by 17th century handwritten text. Therefore a hybrid book. Engraved titlepage and all 8 half-page illustrations present and in good condition.

Later decorated paper binding, with some very light fading on the edges and spine. Quarto edition, in -4. Pages with light browning on the edges but overall in good condition.

[NL] ‘Pastorale liefdeskomedie uit 1634 gedrukt in Amsterdam door Pieter Jansz. Slyp. Jan Hermansz. Krul (ca 1601-1646) schreef muzikale en toneelstukken voor de periode van voor de Amsterdamse Schouwburg, dus van vóór 1637. Diana is bedoeld voor de rederijkerskamers, huiselijke voordracht en muziekkringen. Het stuk draait om liefdesverwarring tussen herders en herderinnen in een natuurwereld waarin Diana (de godin van de jacht, wildernis, maan en kuisheid) wordt opgevoerd als symbolische kracht die de orde in de liefde weer herstelt. Het stuk eindigt met huwelijksvreugde en is daarom bly-eyndend. Nummer 3 of Landwehr description nr 422 (Eerlycke tytkorting bestaende in verscheyde Rymen).
