Half-length portrait of preacher Melchior Leydecker (1642-1721), in oval frame, butst turned to the right, head towards the left, wearing clerical robes and a flat white collar, holding a Bible in his left hand, a column in the background. Inscribed on a cartouche at bottom: ‘MELCHIOR LEYDECKER / Mediob-Zeelandus S.S. Th. D. / In sua patria Primum Verbi Divimi Minister. Dein / IN ACADEMIA ULTRAJECTINA .S.S. THEOLOGIAE PROFESSOR.’ Leydecker was a theologian who studied in Utrecht and Leiden and then became a preacher in Renesse.
Signed at bottom right: ‘G. Valck sculpsit.’
Last state (?), after removal of inscription at bottom of the plate, with the address of the publisher, and removal of the reference to the painter, on the bottom left of the oval frame.
On the bottom margin, right corner, life dates of the sitter in pen and brown ink.
