Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743)
[Antique history print, engraving] I Canada: Description des Castors… [Canada], published 1719, 1 p.
Illustration from the sixth volume of Henry Abraham Chatelain’s (1684-1743) Atlas Historique, ou Nouvelle Introduction a l’Histoire a la Chronoligie & a la Geographie Ancienne & Modern …, published in Amsterdam in 1719. It depicts ethnographic and faunal aspects of Canada. For instance, it illustrates beavers and their industry, as well as Canadian Indians’ canoes, dwellings, hunting, fishing, clothes, rituals, customs and writings.
Chatelain was a Huguenot pastor of Parisian origins. He is best known as a Dutch cartographer and more specifically for his cartographic contribution in the seminal seven volume Atlas Historique , published in Amsterdam between 1705-1720. Innovative for its time, the Altlas Historique combined fine engravings and artwork with scholarly studies of geography, history, ethnology, heraldry, and cosmography. Rather than a personal endeavor, the publication was a family enterprise involving Henri, his father Zacharie and his brother, also Zacharie.
