Half-length portrait of Gerard van Honthorst, turned to the right, facing the viewer; wearing a cap with a loose strap, a white shirt and a cloak; holding a compass and a block with geometrical figures; after a self-portrait by Gerard van Honthorst.
Lettered in lower margin with title, two lines of Italian and production details: “Pittore di Figure … / … mori l’anno 1660.” and “Gio. Dom. Ferretti del. / Cosimo Mogalli sc.” After an unidentified self-portrait by Gerard van Honthorst, probably in a Florentine collection. Published in “Ritratti De’ Più Celebri Professori Di Pittura Dipinti Di Propria Mano Esistenti Nell’Imperial Galleria Di Firenze… ” published by Francesco Moücke in Florence, in 1748.
Engraving on paper, with broad margins; plate mark: 254 x 179 mm, total: 460 x 302 mm; some light foxing and smudges along the most external margins, damp stain on the top right corner. In very good condition. Muller 1853, van Someren 1888.
Gerard Hermansz. van Honthorst was een Nederlands schilder, een van de meest begaafde volgelingen van Caravaggio. Hij wordt gerekend tot de Utrechtse caravaggisten. Hij was een van de weinige schilders met een internationale faam. Zijn grote voorbeeld was Antoon van Dyck.
