A classic work of seventeenth-century Dutch Protestant devotional literature, Vrolicke Uren des Doodts teaches the Christian art of preparing for death through faith, meditation, and moral reflection. This enlarged second edition is especially desirable for its additional engraved plates with vanitas and ars moriendi images.
Full contemporary vellum binding with some wear on the extremities. Spine with handwritten text: Jac. Lydii Vrolicke uren des doodts 1662. Octavo edition, in -8, 16 x 10 cm. Engraved title vignette and 10 illustrations by S. Savery. Titlepage on the top part loose for ca 4 cm. page *2 restored with some paper on the left top. Further a good copy, about 3 pages with some minor frayes. Collation: *-3*8 A-Y8. Complete copy. At the end: Een ‘s Samen-spraeck tusschen een oudt man ede de Doodt.
Intriguing illustrations: frontispiece with on the left a Christian soldier, armed with faith (the staff entwined with a serpent symbolizing God’s salvation and healing); on the right appear Death as a skeleton, the fires of divine judgment, and demonic figures. Above them, an angel sounds the trumpet announcing the Resurrection. These powerful images remind the reader to prepare throughout life for the inevitable moment of death and the Last Judgment. Full page illustration of a man hanging above a dragon and under a unicorn.
Jacobus Lydia began his education at the Latin School in the Rue Neuve in Belgium under Antonius Aemilius, after which he studied theology at the University of Leiden. At the age of 23 he became pastor in Bleskensgraaf. In 1642 he was nominated by Jacob Cats to go to England to mediate between the authoritarian King Karel I and his parliament. After returning in 1645 he acquired a name as an archaeologist, theologian and poet.

[NL] De titel Vrolicke uren des doodts betekent niet dat de dood zelf vrolijk is, maar dat een gelovige de laatste levensuren met vreugde kan beleven omdat de dood de overgang vormt naar het eeuwige leven bij God. De ondertitel Der wysen vermaeck verwijst naar het geestelijke genoegen dat de wijze, dat wil zeggen de godvrezende mens, vindt in de overdenking van de vergankelijkheid.
