Already in the introduction, J.F. Helmers (1767-1813) called De Hollandsche Natie a “manifesto” of nationalism.

In 1812, the year of publication, this attitude could not help but turn out wrong: the French rule was crushing any form of national self-consciousness, and even after censorship intervened, the poem was still considered dangerous – reason for an imperial arrest warrant in 1813. Helmers ultimately passed away before he could be transported to Paris.
