Aarts, Johannes Josephus (1871-1934)
[Original engraving/originele gravure] Two workers with wooden planks/Twee werkmannen met houten planken.
Two workmen in the foreground, one holding a pile of wooden planks. Further in the background other two men working. Signed and dated in pencil below: “Aarts 04”. Aarts was a teacher at The Hague Academy of Arts. He depicted allegories (many related to death) but also farmers and working men in general. The characters in his compositions show the signs of hard work. Very vivid are the expressions on the faces also in this fascinating impression. Naturalistic elements are also present, rendered with every small detail. See for example the leaves and the natural designs on the wooden planks. Later states of this engraving show that the artist expanded the composition towards the top and the bottom: above he added more sky and finished the hat of the standing man, and below rocks and bushes.
Engraving in brownish ink on paper, total: 392 x 324 mm; undocumented state between the V and VI/11; oily stains on the top region of the print (small branch on the right and on the right side of the face of the standing man). Small ter on the right external margin. Otherwise in very good condition. Date of print 1904.
