Famous notary’s manual in second better edition. Contemporary vellum with some light wear. Manuscript title on the spine “Practyk der notarissen”. Second revised and enlarged edition of this practical manual for use of notaries by Simon van Leeuwen (1626-1682), a lawyer in Leiden and The Hague, also author of historical and political works. Added is a juridical dictionary. Simon van Leeuwen was next to Hugo de Groot the most famous Dutch lawyer of the 17th century.
Van Leeuwen also became the acknowledged authority on the notary’s office, and he still enjoys great fame today in South African law. In this edition models and examples are included for official letters, forms, deeds and other documents. In the preface the author states that he was asked to publish a book on the notary’s profession with the Ars Notariatus of the Antwerp notary Thuys as a model. Although it was mainly intended for Flanders and Brabant, it was republished and used in the Northern Netherlands up to Van Leeuwen’s day. The book became very popular and remained in use all through the 17th and 18th centuries.
Good copy, some stains on some of the pages but overall good.
