The Seaman’s Guide to the Navigation of the Indian Ocean with numerous illustrations, charts and plans, 1881, 1296 pp. To which is added notes on the physical geography of the Indian Ocean by W.H. Rosser. With a stamp on the title page of D. McGregor & Co Liverpool.
Sailing Directions for the Suez Canal including Port Said and Suez with notes on the Gulf of Suez & Red Sea, 1881, 32 pp.

Very much worn sheep skin binding, guilt letters on the front Indian Ocean Pilot ad drawing of the globe. Interior with some folds and smudges but still good readible and bound together.

When first published in 1703, this volume in the English Pilot series was the first complete seaman’s guide for the Indian Ocean and Far Eastern waters published in England. A copy of the final edition (1761) was carried by Cook on his first voyage to Australia.

Provenance: With handwritten inscription on the flyleaf: Orfiff Terpsichorf (?). Could also be a reference to the muse of dance Terpsichore.
