Letter of August 19, 1839 on thin paper, 4 pp. Delicate paper with some creases and damages.Total page size: 24,5 x 19,5 cm. With the instruction that when G. Bom has collected so many books as will fill a chest, send them to Miss Smith Ho Ship Brokers Boomtjes (?) Rotterdam who will ship them for London. On the list: Temple de muses, Biels thesaurus, Relandi Palestina, Hoornbeek Theologia, Brucker, Weismann, Mastricht Theolgia, Venema in Salmos, Emblemata, Venema opera, Josephus Havecampe, Seneca opera Gronov, First vol of Calvin’s works (Calvijn), etc. List with the booknames and the prices he was willing to pay.
Two letters, manuscripts, on laid paper with address on the back, both around 34 x 21 cm. One letter with red seal. First letter of April 16, 1832 written from Genemuiden by J.A. Visscher. In the text: Kastelein Groothuis heeft gezegd dat ik zou laten weten de bepaling omtrent de belasting die ik aan hem gedaan heb. The other letter dated Leiden 3 april 1832. Signed by J.A. Fischer. In the text: saldo van de rekening, de heer Jongman afgehandeld, op 8 maart 1828 ontvangen leer is een verschilt in wigt en prijs, (…) geaccepteerd en geboekt, alleen de gewone korting etc. Aan de onderzijde bedragen en jaartallen tussen 1826 en 1830.
Robert Gladding, bookseller and avid book reader, was born in 1808 and died in 1896. He had a shop in Whitechapel London, between 1830-1835. He was most prominent in East London in public affairs, serving on the Board of Guardians, The Board of Works and the Metropolitan Asylums Board. (Source: Letter of the Borough librarian of the Central Library in London dated November 1973). Research shows that Robert Gladding lived on the site of nos 203-205 Whitechapel Road from around 1830-1862 when he moved to 151 Whitechapel Road. This letter however mentions 97 & 98 Whitechapel Road.
